Quotes About Libraries

I don’t think it’s anybody’s business what I’m reading in the library.

Library Policies

Policy for Access to Non-Print Materials

Any district resident, aged twelve or older, shall be entitled to an adult library card. Patrons under age 18 require a parent or guardian signature, accepting financial responsibility for materials borrowed.

In keeping with the tradition of the American Library Association, The Syosset Public Library Board of Trustees affirms that an informed community values its intellectual freedom and respects and tolerates diverse ideas and opinions.

The Syosset Public Library further affirms that library staff cannot act "in loco parentis," and urges parents to exercise their responsibility to guide their own children's selection of the library's audiovisual materials.

"Parents-and only parents-have the right and responsibility to restrict access of their children-and only their children-to library resources... Librarians and library governing bodies cannot assume the role of parents or the functions of parental authority in the private relationship between parent and child." American Library Association, Free Access to Libraries for Minors: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights.

The Syosset Public Library employs highly trained professional librarians to assist parents in evaluating the library's collection of non-print materials. Librarians will provide published reviews and respected reference guides for anyone who seeks assistance on use of library resources.
