SUMMER 2010 TEEN PROGRAMS

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD. Thursday, June 10 and Monday, August 30. 7 PM. In TeenSpace. Earn community service hours! No registration required. Free. Refreshments.

SUMMER READING TITLE SWAP. Monday, June 21. 7–8 PM. Before you start your summer vacation, stop by for some cookies and share some beach reading suggestions. No registration required. Free. Refreshments provided.

TEEN VIDEO GAME AFTERNOONS. Fridays, June 25 and July 30. 3-4 PM. Come on down to play with our Wii and try out our new video games. No registration required. Free. Refreshments provided.

  • PAJAMA BOOK BUDDIES. Monday, June 14. 7–7:45 PM. Read to children 3 ½ years old to kindergarten and wear your pj’s! Registration begins Monday, May 10 for SSD residents; May 17 for non-residents.
  • SUMMER CRAFT WITH KIDS. Monday, July 19. 7–8 PM. Help a child create a craft to take home. Registration begins Monday, June 14 for SSD residents; June 21 for non-residents.
  • CANDY BINGO NIGHT. Monday, August 9. 7–7:45 PM. Play Bingo with kids for candy. Registration begins Monday, July 19 for SSD residents; July 26 for non-residents.

TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM

All students entering 6 th grade or higher (as of September 2010) are invited to join the Teen Summer Reading Program “Make Waves @ Your Library”. Exciting weekly raffles. Sign up at TeenSpace or online at www.syossetlibrary.org beginning Monday, June 21. The Summer Reading Program begins on Monday, June 28 and ends on Friday, August 6 with a Wrap Up Party. Refreshments at all programs. Registration for all Teen Summer programs begins on Monday, June 7 for SSD residents; June 14 for non-residents.

TITLE WAVE CUPCAKES. Monday, June 28. 7-8 PM. Each chef will decorate delicious cupcakes with tiny title waves on top. Free.

TEEN KARAOKE NIGHT. Thursday, July, 8. 7-9 PM. Let’s make some sound waves with YouTube karaoke! We need talented teens who like to sing to pick a song (or two) and rock out in the theater! Performers must register their song selections in advance. No tickets required for audience members.

BEACH SCENE WATERCOLOR with Ivy Bell-Bazer. Monday, July 26. 7-8 PM. Let’s make waves in the ocean through watercolor techniques. Learn various methods including wet and dry watercolor painting and drawing by observation. Materials fee: $2.50.

MARTIAL ARTS FOR TEENS. Monday, August 2. 7-8:30 PM. Interested in martial arts? In his workshop, Master Sitan Chen will give you a demonstration followed by the chance to learn some moves in a beginners’ class. Dress in comfortable clothing.Free.

HUNGER GAMES JEOPARDY. Tuesday, August 3. 3-4 PM. Win a copy of Mockingjay, the final book in Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games trilogy, which will be released on August 24, by entering and winning our contest! Free.

SUMMER READING WRAP UP PIZZA PARTY. Minute to Win It. Friday, August 6. Compete against the clock to win prizes! Based on the hit game show. Pizza at 6:30 PM. Minute to Win It at 7 PM. Summer Reading grand prize raffle drawings at 8:30 PM. (Ongoing registration limited to Summer Reading members who have read at least one book.) Free.


NEW MOON MOVIE AND VAMPIRE CUPCAKES. Monday, August 16. 6:30-9 PM. Learn how to create vampire cupcakes and watch The Twilight Saga:New Moon. Registration begins Monday, July 19 for SSD residents; July 26 for non-residents.  Free.

Wii BUDDIES AFTERNOON. Tuesday, August 17. 3-4:30 PM. Teenvolunteers needed to help kids grades 1-5 play Wii Sports and other board games. Registration begins Monday, July 19 for SSD residents; July 26 for non-residents.  Free. Refreshments.

 

COLLEGE PREPARATION SERIES

Get ready for college with the following key programs:

SAT /ACT COMBO PRACTICE EXAM. Presented by Kaplan Test Prep. Exam on Saturday, July 10. 9:30 AM-1:30 PM. Parents and students evaluate test results on Monday, July 12. 7-8:30 PM. Free. Registration begins Monday, June 14 for SSD residents; June 21 for non-residents.

Registration for the following free programs begins on Monday, August 16 for SSD residents; August 23 for non-residents.

PSAT/SAT TEST TAKING TIPS with Joan U. Levy. Monday, September 13. 7–8:30 PM.

COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING with Martha Maloof. Sunday, September. 26. 12:30–2:30 PM.

COLLEGE FINANCING with Barry Fox. Monday, October 18. 7-8:30 PM.
