One-Time Opportunities - sign up for Monthly e-mail updates for dates and times

  • Tern and Plover Pre-Fencing – 3 to 6 hours, March
Our Green Team and friends help Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach prepare for the arrival of the endangered Piping Plovers and Least Terns. Volunteers assist with the very simple tying of orange flagging to our symbolic fences, to keep people from walking on the nesting areas. Day-of training is provided, and fun is had by all!
  • Beach Cleanups – 2 to 4 hours, April or September
Join our Weld Beach Cleanups in Nissequoge (Smithtown) for a fun and useful time on a North-Shore beach! Volunteers have removed up to 60 bags of trash in years past!
  • Seabeach Amaranth Monitors- 3 to 6 hours, August Our Green Team helps to count the endangered plant, Seabeach Amaranth, and collects and screens seeds for fertilization. Day-of training is provided for this interesting and educational opportunity.
  • *Festival Attendants – 3 to 12 hours, April through October
Join us for a one-hour training and you will be all set to volunteer at one of our Festival Booths during the nicer weather. You get to learn about Conservation and tell other people about the work The Conservancy does. Attendance at only a few of these festivals can take care of all your service hours, and gives you great practice at public speaking!
  • Painters- 2 to 5 hours, Any Time
When the weather is nice, our Green Team can assist on our preserves by giving a fresh coat of paint to our preserve buildings, kiosks, and signs. Locations will vary around the island.
  • Calligrapher- 2 to 6 hours, Any Time
Green Teamers who have Calligraphy as a skill can assist us in some special signage and invitation projects.
  • *Photographers- 3-6 hours, Any Time
If you are a budding or experienced photographer, and would like to capture some of the beautiful sights on our preserves (or capture other people enjoying the landscape), we can use your time and your donation of photos for our newsletters and publications! All photos become property of The Nature Conservancy.
  • Reporters/Writers - 2 to 12 hours, Any Time
If you like to write about Nature, you can study a topic that The Nature Conservancy works on and write an article for our seasonal newsletter, The Conservancy Cardinal! Issues come out in March, June, September, and December.

Ongoing Opportunities

  • Green Team Orientation Crew
Become a part of the "Green Team Orientation Crew (GTOC)", helping to develop an interesting and interactive orientation program, and assisting us once per month in orienting other new and prospective volunteers to the current activities of Long Island's Nature Conservancy.
  • Invasive Species Monitor (Weed Watchers)
Invasive plant species represent one of the greatest threats to biodiversity on Long Island. Join a special project to monitor and map the invasive plant species at natural areas across Long Island. Training will be provided.
  • *Interpretive Trail Projects
Create a self-guided interpretive trail walk at one of our 13 visitor preserves. Project can be done within the group or individual’s own timeline.
  • *Kiosk re-designs and building
Repair, build, or update and redesign visitor information kiosks at The Nature Conservancy’s visitor preserves. Project can be done within group or individual’s own timeline. Project selected must be able to be completed within Community Service hours.
  • Native Plant Garden
Volunteer gardener(s) needed to help us maintain our two small native plant gardens- weeding, mulching, pruning and otherwise loving our plants. Once per week in the Spring, Summer and Fall, until your service hours are completed. We will supply all necessary tools and supplies.
  • *Preserve Monitoring (Adopt-A-Preserve)
This program allows you to undertake the “care and feeding” of a Conservancy preserve of your choice for 1 + years. Green Team volunteers will visit their preserve on a regular basis (at least once per month) to clean up trash, monitor trails, and check for trespass or encroachments.
  • Slide Collection Reorganization
Attention history and photography buffs! Are you organized? Do you enjoy cataloging and sorting? Help our Science and Stewardship department maximize the potential of their slide collection! You can be the Green Team volunteer to assist with the labeling, filing, and organization of our extensive slide library.

Quotes About Libraries

I’d be happy if I could think that the role of the library was sustained and even enhanced in the age of the computer.
