No. Children under the age of 12 must have a parent/guardian in the building at all times.
A babysitting registry is available at the Reference Desk for parents seeking babysitters. This registry provides information for teenage sitters who have completed a Teen Babysitting Workshop held under the tutelage of a professional. The library holds Teen Babysitting Workshops, taught by registered nurses, several times a year and an annual Teen Babysitting Job Fair which provides a chance for parents to meet and greet potential babysitters who have completed the course.
Sorry, the library does not provide information on nannies or full-time caretakers.
The library provides various activities for children based on age and grade. These can be found listed online or in your newsletter, which is mailed out to Syosset residents four times a year. For those interested in non-library related activities, feel free to browse our Community page, which provides links for various local places of interest.
Most programs have registration dates which are listed in the newsletter and online calendar. You can register online by clicking on Events and Classes on the main page of the library’s website. The child’s library card and PIN (the last 4 digits of your phone number) are necessary to register online. Payment is due within one week of registration date. You can also register in person.
Children's programs are designed to work best for the ages indicated. If you have a specific question regarding this policy, please contact the Children’s Department at 516-921-7161 ext. 232.
All children must register in advance for a program. However, if the program is full and the child meets the age requirements they will be permitted in after waiting 15 minutes if all registered children do not show up. If the program is not full and they meet the age requirements they will be permitted in. In both circumstances, if the program has a fee it must be paid upon admittance to the class.
