Long Range Plan (2022 - 2026)

MISSION STATEMENT:
It is the mission of the Syosset Public Library to provide the residents of the Syosset School District with the broadest possible range of information resources as well as a variety of opportunities for cultural enrichment that enhances the quality-of-life of the community.

 

VISION STATEMENT:
The Syosset Public Library will continue to be recognized as a trusted source for information, an integral part of the cultural and educational life of the community, offering opportunities for life-long learning for all, throughout each stage of their lives.

 

VALUES:

The library shall maintain excellence in its staff, collections, and services.

The library shall provide a safe, comfortable and modern facility that offers an approachable, welcoming, and friendly environment for the community.

The library aims to provide the highest quality customer service, responsive, and nonjudgmental in recognizing the diversity of the community it serves.

The library provides its staff with the training and learning opportunities for professional development necessary to keep services and skills relevant and excellent.

The library shall provide a technology forward environment for the community.

The library is governed by sound financial management and oversight.

 

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate building systems, signage, space allocation and furniture to enhance efficiency, safety, functionality and aesthetics.

Action: Assess the HVAC equipment in the Children’s Room to determine a timeline for replacement.

Action: Purchase additional cabinetry and counter space for the staff room to provide storage for small appliances and paper goods. Replace carpeting in the staff room with vinyl flooring to maintain a cleaner environment.

Action: Improve the aesthetics of the Children’s Room through the use of paint, wall treatments and décor to promote a warm, friendly and fun environment.

Action: Investigate the feasibility of converting to LED lighting throughout the building to reduce energy costs and improve brightness.

Action: Purchase new furniture that incorporates outlets and ports for electronic devices, update furniture used for displays, purchase additional shelving for the Teen collection and purchase smaller study tables designed for individual use.

Action: Investigate the feasibility of creating small group and/or private study rooms.

 

OBJECTIVE: Improve communications and public relations with the community.

Action: Redesign the website with the assistance of a professional website developer.

Action: Make available various marketing and information packets, in hard copy and through email marketing campaigns, to inform new and existing patrons about the services and activities the library offers.

Action: Add electronic video displays to promote library programs and services.

Action: Continue the use and exploration of new and emerging social media platforms.

Action: Investigate the use of QR codes to promote and advertise library programs, events and services.

 

OBJECTIVE: Recognize and embrace trends in technology to enhance the library experience.

Action: Support the maker movement by redesigning the Children's Story Room to create a Junior Makerspace for children and tweens by purchasing new furniture and maker equipment.

Action: Keep the staff up to date on technology trends, cybersecurity and network security training.

 

OBJECTIVE: Improve and enhance library programs, events, collections and services.

Action:  Upgrade equipment in the theater and meeting rooms for hybrid programming to accommodate library patrons that prefer attending programs and events online.

Action:  Offer more large-scale and special library events for families.

Action:  Offer more family programs that promote appreciation of the culturally diverse nature and heritage of members of the community.

Action:  Expand our "take and make" programming options where patrons pick up craft and project kits at the library and assemble later at home.

Action:  Develop a seed library to engage the community in hands-on programming that leads to sharing stories, experiences and garden harvests with others.

Action:  Purchase a portable oven/range for cooking programs and demonstrations.

 

OBJECTIVE:  Maximize the potential of each employee by providing development and training opportunities, fostering teamwork, improving communication, responding to employee input, needs and morale.

Action:  Identify training opportunities for staff; improve cross-training between library departments.

Action:  Promote a positive work culture through meetings, team building exercises and improved communication.

Action:  Continue providing customer service and safety training for new employees and refresher training for existing employees.

Action:  Educate staff about the changing demographics of the community including cultural differences, gender identification, and aging.

 

OBJECTIVE: Improve and develop relationships with local organizations and groups.

Action: Identify local organizations and groups to partner with for programs and services that support the Syosset-Woodbury community.

Action: Develop partnerships for off-site programming at local sites of interest.
